Our Organization

Youn Wha Ryu Martial Arts is a traditional and complex self-defense system that goes beyond "kicking and punching". Students learn practical self-defense concepts that focus on increasing reaction, timing, speed, and full-body power.

The comprehensive curriculum includes techniques from Kung Fu, Karate, Taekwondo, Hwarang Do, Jiu-Jitsu, Aikido, Judo, Hapkido, Kendo and others.

We are committed to our students physical, mental, and spiritual development and see our Grandmaster Han's community as our family.

Our organization and mission go far beyond just traditional martial arts training. We truly believe that the world can be changed, one person at a time. The ultimate goal of our instructors is to help the students achieve their full potential.

Class Structure

The dynamic classes combine both aerobic and anaerobic training and encourage the development of self-discipline, perseverance, agility, coordination, flexibility, and total-body strength.

The traditional, family-oriented martial arts classes are approximately one-hour in length and follow a structured format.

Each class consists of warm-ups, followed by instruction kicks, punches, basic techniques, and forms. Training can be modified, as needed, for students to be able to participate regardless of age and ability.

Rank Promotion is an option for students who train consistently, learn all the required rank-level curriculum and receive instructor's recommendations. Promotional testing's are graded by World Youn Wha Ryu Taekwondo Association Master Level Instructors.

Leadership

One of the most important tenants of our martial arts is committing ourselves to being servant leaders inside of and outside of our classes. A servant-leader's focus is on the growth and well-being of people and the communities to which they belong.

Our system focuses on six training principles:
Be Polite
Be Patient
Be Alert
Be Brave
Do Your Best
Respect Yourself and Others

Our Grandmaster - Man Hee Han

Grandmaster Han holds a 9th dan Black Belt and is recognized and respected by the World Taekwondo Federation. Grandmaster Han has had the unique opportunity to train and master several martial arts and was fortunate enough to train under three famous martial artists of his time.

His first teacher was Son Bop Sa. Master Son was a traveling monk who had observed the young Man Han. He then presented himself to the young man's mother and asked permission to take the boy along with him and educate him in meditation and martial arts. Permission was granted and the 6-year-old Han went off with the monk to train and learn. Most of the training Grandmaster Han went through during this time was focused on the strengthening and sensitizing of the mind. In other words, he was trained to have a "sixth sense" mainly through Zen and other mental activities. His training consisted of focusing the ming through meditation and qigong or breathing exercises. Six years later, the young Han began to long for home and asked his master for permission to go back and see his parents. The monk conceded and let him go. It would be the last time he would ever see his master again.

The second of his famous instructors was a man known as Byung In Yun. Master Yun taught Grandmaster Han a system called Kong Soo, one that predated Taekwondo. Grandmaster Han began training under Master Yun at the age of 13. At the same time Grandmaster Han met the young Sae Chong Wang. Master Wang was his Youn Wha instructor. Although the Youn Wha Ryu system contains forms, it is mainly a conglomeration of high-level fighting techniques form all the martial arts systems. During this time period of middle school and high school, Grandmaster Han also studied Hwarang-Do, Kendo, Hapkido, and various weapons. He attained an 8th dan in Hwarang-Do, 7th dan in Kendo, 8th dan in Hapkido, 4th dan in Judo and has trained extensively in 24 different weapons: rope, throwing star, double sticks, short stick, six-foot staff, Hapkido cane, tonfa, sai, and others. After leaving high school, Grandmaster Han entered the law program at Kon Kuk University, where he graduated with his Bachelor's degree.

Grandmaster Han is a respected member of the Martial Arts community and was on the Board of Directors of the Korean Taekwondo Federation in its early days. He helped designed the Palgue forms presently used by the World Tae Kwon Do Federation. During his tenure with the Korean Tae Kwon Do Federation, Grandmaster Han was appointed president of the North Province of Seoul.

Besides his martial arts credentials, Grandmaster Han served as a Special Tactics Instructor for the Korean Itelligence Agency, Teaching martial art techniques to the Korean military. He was also called to train the 7th US Army Infantry Division from 1970 to 1972 in hand to hand combat and served as Close Combat Instructor fro the 2nd Army Infantry Division from 1972 to 1976.

In 1976, Grandmaster Han and his family made the choice to immigrate to the United States. His first encounter with the U.S. was New Jersey. From there the Han family moved to Dallas in 1978, where they still reside today.

My child has ADHD. Will martial arts help?

My Child Has ADHD, will this help?

Yes! One of the great things about martial arts classes is that it's an individual sport done in a group environment. We find all our students improve in their focus, self control, discipline and social skills. But the best part is…. They don't even realize that is what our highly trained kids martial arts instructors are actually doing. They just think they are having fun!

The best way to find out for yourself is to take advantage of our limited time offer. You'll find our team so helpful and dedicated to helping your child become the best version of themselves. If you are concerned about group classes for your child, we also offer private classes until they feel ready to take on the group class setting!

Are parents allowed to watch?

We encourage parents to watch their children in their martial arts lessons. We love parents getting involved! Even better… you can join in our taekwondo martial arts classes as well and have yet another thing in common with your little one. We love seeing the bond of families who train together!
